Lesson 05 · hands-on

The Red Pen pass: one accent, one argument

Sheet 1 of 14
Sheet 1

Notice what this card does not do.

It does not have six colors, a legend, a drop shadow, or a title that just repeats the axis. It has one number, one accent, and one point. That restraint is a decision, and after this lesson it will be one you can make on command.

kit/kpi-card · nothing wasted

Good chart design is not adding polish. It is subtraction, done on purpose. The red pen removes; it almost never adds.

Sheet 2

Today you learn to take things away.

A working chart is the start, not the finish. Most working charts are also loud: they compete with themselves, three ideas fighting for the one accent. The red pen settles the fight. You will learn the four cuts, then hand them to the intern as a single rework instruction.

A chart should make exactly one argument. What is the first thing the red pen removes?
Everything competing with the one accent. If two things are emphasized, nothing is. Pick the one thing that matters and let the rest go grey.
