Static files, served over https from a host you control. Nothing runs server side, and nothing calls out: the packet reproduces the scan that proves it, with a checksum for every file. Your workbook data moves over Tableau's own channel, in the browser, and reaches no outside server.
Why data stays put is the same architecture the hosted version runs on: how the data path works. What self-hosting removes is not a data risk, it is a policy blocker: some organizations will not take a runtime dependency on an outside vendor's URL. This package removes the dependency.
Tableau requires https for any host other than localhost. An internal certificate is fine, as long as the machines running Tableau trust the issuing CA. A plain http host will not load.
